Since I was about seven years old, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I loved playing school with neighborhood friends. Putting those star stickers on papers was so much fun! The endless hours playing on the chalkboard with different colored chalk still lingers in my memory.
I am in my twenty-second year of teaching. I have a master's degree in reading. I've had multiple positions throughout my career which has shifted my thinking and given me many opportunities to see issues through different lenses.
I started my career at the elementary level. I taught fourth grade and also was a literacy interventionist at the elementary level. The last twelve years have been at the middle school level. I currently am a literacy interventionist for grades six, seven, and eight. The best and most integral part of my job is scaffolding students with questions and strategies. This is really getting at the heart of strategic reading and thinking.
I am most looking forward to using more graphic organizers this year. I spent this past spring and summer making and revising interactive notebooks for leveled literacy intervention. After I thought about this idea, I got to work and used the graphic organizers with the guided reading books. The students participated more in their guided reading work and were more engaged during their independent work time.
I am married with two children. I have a daughter who is starting grade seven and a son who is in starting grade five. During my free time, I enjoy scrapbooking, reading, traveling, and teaching ESL online.
